In December 1981, the White House believed Libyan assassins were coming for Ronald Reagan.
The reports were dramatic.
A hit team had supposedly entered the United States.
Its targets included the president and senior members of his administration.
Security tightened around Reagan, Vice President George H.W. Bush, Secretary of State Alexander Haig, Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger and several senior White House officials. Secret Service and FBI agents searched for the alleged team. Border officials were given names, aliases and descriptions.
Reagan publicly said the United States had evidence.
On December 10, the administration took action.
